I imagine Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave right now. Say what you want about Apple products, their ad campaigns and marketing strategies have largely been brilliant. I was shocked to see these videos--so shocked, I thought that they were bad parodies at first. But the source is the Apple youtube channel...
This campaign casts Apple users as completely inept and technologically unsavvy. While I understand there's some level of exaggeration being used in these commercials (for "comedic effect", I assume), this does nothing to convice me that Apple products are the sleek, easy-to-use, intuitive machines that Steve Jobs always intended for them to be. It's either that, or Apple thinks its users are painfully stupid. Either way, bad move on Apple's part.
Watch them for yourself and let me know what you think.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoWow... Well I guess Apple even admits their fanbase are unable to something as simple as make a video in a basic editing program. I had my Grandma edit a christmas video in Windows Movie Maker and after she got used to the interface she had no problem. You don't need a Mac, and you certainly don't need a "genius."

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoWhat I can never understand is why tech people think they are so mighty, superior, and "above" people who are not tech savvy. Is anybody here able to comprehend the fact that not everybody's life revolves around technology? Some people, to put it bluntly, don't give a flying fuck about technology and why should everybody? Everybody has different values in their life. Some people value design in a computer, so they might buy a Mac. Why is that *wrong*? Can you actually tell me a legitimate reason why that is wrong? It's not, it's a personal choice.
If you paid attention, you'd see all three of the "users" in the videos are at least middle-aged or older and we all know most middle-aged people are not too tech savvy and that's why I think the ads are so simplified. They are targeting a very specific audience with these ads.
Also, I'd like to ask, has anybody here who hates on Apple, consoles, or what ever else, actually gotten to know any of these people? I know people who use Macs, consoles, etc. and the ones I know personally are not stupid. Some of them are even smarter than some of the people floating around this site. Every platform, or company, or industry is going to have smart and dumb people/users, that's just common sense.
Anyways... Point being, using a certain product is not an indicator of intellect. I'd think the people at this site who claim to be so logical and informed, would be able to understand such a simple concept.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI'm not trying to bash Apple users, I'm pointing out that this marketing campaign seems to almost directly contradict with what Apple previously advertised itself as--intuitive, easy-to-use, trendy. Here, they're saying that you need a genius to figure out how to use their products.
Perhaps it's their attempt to rope in previous Windows users or an older generation, perhaps they're trying to expand their appeal. But this campaign, in my opinion, fell flat on its face. That's all I'm trying to point out with this article.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoYou do make a valid point. It does seem very contradictive that the users in the video would need a "genius" to do these things when they've always said how easy it is to do everything. I think they just failed to get their point across with it. Like, I think most people will watch the ads and not even understand what Apple trying to convey with them.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoYes, that is one problem... the second problem is this: Apple has always had clean and quirky ads. This ad is poorly written, poorly shot, and poorly acted. The ads remind me of some terrible sales ad from the 80's... It's not clean, and slick, and polished... and well.. it's just not Apple.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoWell Apple products would be considered a scam in most industries, so I wouldn't be surprised if people get a sour taste in their mouth when they claim they are superior in hardware and software. Everything about them is pretentious as hell. I couldn't care less about the users.
The last AD up there portrays a PC salesman as a shyster, the irony there is incredible. I feel like Apple as a company deserves the negative labels they work so hard to earn.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoSo...you're saying PC salesmen aren't shysters? That's the reason I started learning about and building my own computers. Every computer my parents bought when I was younger fell way short of all of our expectations, so I decided to say fuck all the salesmen. Fuck Dell, fuck HP, fuck Gateway, and fuck Apple. I'm making my own shit from now on, so that I don't get overcharged for a piece of shit.
The only difference is that I hate Apple the most because they charge the most. If they sold their stuff for a fair price then I would hold them in much higher regard.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoApple has finaly admited that they and there fanbase are retarded, and whats up with them and renaming shit ?
like:
Genius = Computer Technician or Tech
App = Computer Applications or Applications
mac = Macintosh Computers or Macintosh
i = ?
PC = Personal computer, that means yes even a Apple Computer is in fact a PC lol
I think Apple needs to get there heads out there A$$. and the PC community should make some Anti-Apple ad campaign like how they did there Anti-PC campaign .

I went to a mac store once in New York and the level of stupidity on both sides was staggering. I had to get out. I hate their products, I hate their fanbase and users...and their products are making them more and more dumb by each product they release.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI'd have to agree with you there, lol. I went into a Verizon store to buy my Galaxy S3, and there was a middle aged couple there. The wife asked the Verizon salesman what the difference was between the iPhone and an Android phone. The salesman's response was that Android was more fleshed out and customizable and that the iPhone was basically a "smartphone for dummies."
The wife's response was "Oh, good." She bought the iPhone.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoEh, most of my friends use Apple products, part of that is because my college actually supports Apple products better than Microsoft products. Why that is...idk. I haven't bothered to look into it. Regardless, people buy them for a multitude of reasons. You'll find mouthbreathers anywhere if you're looking for them.
I do strongly dislike the company--they sue everyone into oblivion and create products which are overpriced and locked-down. And now, apparently, they insult their own fanbase.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoA company that never respected themselves or their workers will never respect the people that support their crap. It's only a matter of time, I hope, that people find this out and stop buying their crap. People need "dumb" technology, I get that everyone is not tech savvy, but today's youth, 2012, people should understand what they're buying and how to use it. And I never understood why college's support Apple products either. I took a photography class last year and the instructor said, "You HAVE to have a Macbook, they're the best computers you can buy and the best for photography." I aced that class with a $300 digital camera and a Asus Eee netbook O______o

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI'm pretty sure Tim Cook himself could get on both knees and kiss your ass and you'd still have something to complain about. We get it, you hate Apple. It's clear you are not capable of participating in a open-minded discussion about them so perhaps we should just stop discussing them now.

We're currently under a Linux networking farm and it's beast. But I guess nothing can beat an iMac so everyone's wrong :)

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI posted saying that's what IS good for, learn to read. Also, I have never owned a Mac computer. The only thing Apple I've owned is a used iPod that was given to me for free. You assume just because I don't hate on Apple that I like them? No, I just don't hate on things because they're not my preference.
Little known fact, Logan himself has owned a Apple computer.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoThis is true... I have an Apple G4 Power PC somewhere... 733MHz! I also had a couple Apple 2e computers growing up... I now own a 160GB iPod that was given to me. I don't really like the way it functions but it's 160 GB.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoLOL what Logan has owned is irrelevent here, respectfully. I don't think him and I have ever owned the same piece of hardware except the ADATA SSD :P If you think that I'm "hating" on Apple then just be the bigger man and walk away. I don't like Apple, I don't like their "hardware" I don't like their business practices so I'm going to voice my, I'll admit, more openly expressed opinion. Sorry, but when I see a company who sues another company because they have a better product, spend $1 Billion dollars just to take down Android instead of putting that money towards say...better work environments, child labor, speaking of which and overpriced crap...yeah it gets me fired up. So, I'll say this. RH00D, I'm sorry I've offended you in any way, I apologize for speaking my mind on a public forum and I'll be sure to wax Tim Cook's balls the next time he's in town.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoEverybody is suing everybody. If that's your reason for hating Apple then you may as well just hate every major player in the tech industry. It's a lot of crap but what can they do? If they don't "eat" they'll be "eaten" so to speak. I brought up Logan owning a Apple computer to prove the point if a huge PC advocate like Logan can spend his hard earned money on a Apple product then that shows he's willing to give Apple a fair and reasonable chance and I don't see why any other PC user can't be capable of the same. I'm willing to bet you have never owned a Apple computer. How are you going to hate them so much when you've likely never owned one of their computers?
If Bill Gates can sit next to Steve Jobs at the D5 conference and respectfully converse with Jobs then I don't see why any other PC user can't respectfully speak about Apple. All you have to say is "Apple isn't for me" and leave it at that. And that's probably true, it's probably not for you. But you don't have to act like they're the epitome of evil.
Also about the ligitation, just because Tim Cook wants to sue somebody, doesn't mean you need to disregard the entire company. The people at Apple who sue are not the same people who are engineering the hardware and working their ass off to make products they believe are good. I dare you to name any major tech company with big success that hasn't had shady business practices at one time or another.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoWhile I understand that this is a commentary about the advertisements (I actually told my roommate a very similar opinion while watchign the opening ceremony the other night) I don't think that you guys should be commenting with so much hate towards the company. I’ve been a 'pc' user for quite a while and I’ve built several rigs, so I wouldn't say that I'm in these add's target audience, but I recently bought myself a macbook air to do my developing on and I will say that aside from a few things that took me a while to set up, I have had quite a nice experience with it. Apple may tend to sue companies left and right for various copyright disputes, but in today's technology business, intellectual property often contributes to the bottom line just as much as sales do and more so even with some companies. Rather than bash those whose practices you don't like, go join or start a company that follows your ideals and have a good time.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI know im going to get bashed for this, but despite apple having some flaws, I dont see any ipod alternatives that are even close to comparing to the ipods apple made (please dont even mention zune). Im sure you guys also use itunes. The point Im trying to make is that Apple isnt all bad. I hate it when people bash an entire company because of one or two incidents that they had with the company.
After all, all companies make mistakes, just because apple is successful and mainstream doesn't mean you have to hate.
I probably went a little overboard so im sorry to whoever took major offence to it. I was just putting it out there for some food for thought.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agowhat ??? befor there was "iPod" there was the mp3 player and i own and use my SONY walkman it is way better then a "iPod" apple takes other companies ideas such as the hp TC1100 Tablet PC in 2003 and ipad in 2010 (2010-04-03) so what do you have to say about that ?
I probably went a little overboard so im not sorry if any apple users took major offence to it. I was just putting it out there, the truth.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoI wouldn't really call that 100% accurate anymore. People are migrating more and more towards keeping their music on their phones now. The iPod was probably one of the best MP3 players ever made, and it had some really good marketing behind it which is why it flourished. I still have my 32GB iPod Video from 2005. I don't use it anymore though, because I just got a 16GB Samsung Galaxy S3 with a 64GB micro SD card. I have no use for an MP3 player anymore because my phone has basically taken over that function.
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw all MP3 players fall off the market in about 3 or 4 years.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoLol I know I didn't take offense, but it turned to a mud-slinging contest in here really quickly. That seems to happen in discussions about Apple, perhaps more so than with discussions about consoles. I do have an ipod for music, I honestly haven't looked hard for an alternative because mine has worked for years now and I get 80GB of storage in a pretty tiny form.
We saw some alternatives out at CES this year but they were really bulky and didn't look like modern devices. For example: http://hifiman.us/Products/?pid=90 I can see how some people would like that device, but I don't think it has the same mass-appeal as an ipod, and I think it's too bulky for what I use my ipod for.
I do use foobar, though, not iTunes...and Adobe products are amazing for photo/video editing, so anyone who says that you need a Mac to do anything creative is full of it.

posted 9 months 3 weeks ago@Krothie, they didn't force it down our throats. People willingly bought them. Also, they didn't release the iPad 'til 2010 because they obviously felt that it wasn't ready for the mass market until 2010.
@LittleViking, I also use foobar2000 for playback of music on my computer and iTunes is strictly for syncing. It's not that iTunes is bad... It's just that foobar2000 so much better! iTunes has become quite bloated though. They cram so many features into it when all I want to do is just play some music.

posted 9 months 3 weeks agoAs a person whos spent a lot of time in an apple store becasue I had friends and a roommate work there. I see nothing wrong with these commercials. Its unbelieveable the ammount of computer ignorant people still out there. Apple makes a lot of money off helping people learn how to use their computers and these commercials are for that purpose.
