EA Makes More Money on the PC than the PS3

EA's quarter one (2012) financial results confirm that their games are doing better on the PC than they are on the PS3.

Many (gaming executives included) see the PC as the last platform. Console fans have been predicting the death of PC gaming for a very long time as well. However, our current laptops and tablets are more powerful than the consoles and as it turns out, EA is making more money on the PC than they are on the PS3.

So, how much are they making? On the PC they made $276 million, on the PS3 they made $267 million, and on the Xbox 360 they made $292 million. If EA allowed their games to be purchased through Steam the number would be even higher. I really wanted Battlefield 3 but I refused to deal with Origin. I know it is getting better, but it's still a mess compared to Steam. I also own Dragon Age but I have never played it. The first time I tried to get it going on Origin I became so frustrated that I decided to play some indie games on Steam instead.

Origin bashing aside, these numbers prove the obvious, that the PC is a force to be reckoned with. EA can do better, but they will need a deeper connection with the community.

Let me know what you guys think... And repost this news so all your console friends can read it. It's time to sway them over to the PC!

And you have to take in the fact that everyone hates Origin...well almost everyone lol.

i think this is good and i think its a kick in the butt of EA, i hope EA and all the outher companies who thing that the console is where the money at see this and start thinking that the PC is a valuebel market because there is alway this time spand were the current generation of consoles starts to fade and thats the exact time were the PC shines because it will never fade and what ive heard so far from the "next gen consoles" the PC will continiue to shine for a long time and i hope the big companies will come back to sense and return to the pc, and we are already seeing this happen there are some great PC only games coming out

maybe this is the last chance for gaming...

Oh man, how I wish they'd get rid of Origin... Such a pain...

Interesting numbers though, but PJBrandt's got a point. It's the end of current consoles lifecycle and you can be sure the pc games development will be put aside as soon as the next gen consoles are out...

Very true. However, we are in the midst of a gaming paridigm shift. We have Onlive, Sony is also jumping into the game streaming service, we have casual gaming on FB, we have an explosing of indie games thanks to services like Steam and the Humble Bundle, free to play is going insane, OUYA has made over 6 million on kickstarter so far, mods are everywhere, kids are making hundreds of thousands of dollars selling freaking hats in TF2. It's a very different world now than it was in the "hay day" of the XBox and PS3. On top of all that, some companies are working on wearable computers (trying to move beyond gamepads, mouses and keyboards, etc.).

There are also no concrete plans for the next gen consoles... On the other hand we have Windows 8.

Who knows what is going to happen (maybe Gaben?).

 youre right !

Gabe is probably the only big guy (no pun indendet) in the gaming industry who knows what hes doing

I completely agree. The gaming ladscape is all but set in stone.

The OUYA story is insane. With Onlive support, it's just the best console you could get. It'll never get old [as long as it can stream 1080p videos for Onlive, you'd have AAA titles as soon as they go out], it runs on a very open platform, making it easier for any software and hardware companies to innovate... It feels like it's just the beginning of a big earthquake.

Gaben saw the opportunity ahead of everyone else, I'm just wondering what will stop them [OUYA ?]. The content is incredible, the platform is very user-friendly, I just wish it would become platform agnostic...

In any case, I'm pretty sure PC gaming has a long road ahead. Performance is far better, modding is possible, and you can always update your pc... Once you bought a XBox, the only upgrade you got is the HDD...

Actually Logan, Microsoft already has a rumor mill going on that is being proven over and over, the next gen MS console will be DX11 based, and future proofed to work with any future revision, as well being easily ported from PC, probably going back to PC-style hardware to make it easier on developers, that's why all the games back on the XBOX looked identical on the PC.  Sony is going AMD, that's already been said and done.  Besides hardware, they are both looking at streaming game services, but the problem is that not everybody has the bandwidth to do so unfortunately.

I think  the only thing that can be said here is:

Ha!

posted 9 months 2 weeks ago

Origin is a good thing. In the realms of digital distribution, steam is king. We need competition, competition leads to innovation, and gets the better deal for the customer. When one company takes up all the market... they can quite easily turn evil...

posted 9 months 2 weeks ago

Very true. I still think it would make financial sense for EA to release their games on both Origin and Steam. The only problem is that Origin would die. They could pull that sneaky nonsense like the Windows Live thing (where some Steam games require Windows Live)... but I'm not sure... It might be time to give Origin another try.

i have battlefield 3 and origin isn't terrible its annoying to not be able to have it with all my steam games. Even though i think bad company 2's gamplay was a lot better than battlefield 3 but back on topic.

Its strange where everything is going to go with this i feel like a lot of people are gonna hold onto windows 7 and then maybe we can slowly transition to linux that be great,

But for now its just a big swirling question mark of mystery

I don't see the reason to bash any platform that somebody enjoys to game on, it's pointless, and kind of childish.  I personally game on all three platforms, and I will state again, the PS3 is more of a niche market, and it's base is a lot smaller than say, the PC and 360.  I can understand that this kind of competition fuels the market to where it needs to go, but take a look at those numbers, the 360 is up there due to how many people own a 360, and that's generally world wide.  I have friends living in countries where owning a fancy PC is a commidity, but getting a MS console is dirt easy, take that as you will.  I'll say this again, I know that both TS and RTW are primarily pro-PC, and from what I have seen, hate anything else, PC ist ubermensch, et al, whatever.  I enjoy reading articles on both sites, but the PC vs "this console" just needs to stop, who gives a damn, enjoy what you enjoy, I know my roots, do you?  Should I care? Should you care? Probably not, but game to game, not because it's superior, do it because it's fun, do it because it makes you feel like a kid again.

We keep having this argument... and I think we should stop arguing over it... however, I think the PC and console debate should stay... we just need to remove the frustration and look at the facts... We need to figure out what each platform does best.

I do call console people "mouth breathers" and such... and I should probably be nicer to them. The only ones I have an issue with are the gamers that play console, have never played PC, but bash PC. That's ignorance. I hate ignorance. If they play PC and console but prefer console, that is cool. I respet that. I don't understand it, but I respect it.

So, help me out here. From my perspective, the only reason to have a console is so that you can play the exclusive titles. Cross platform games (like Skyrim) are usually way better on the PC due to the mods, better resolution, etc. And you can use your console gamepad on the PC (if you want)... So, why not evangelise? Why not tell our friends, "Skyrim is awesome on PC because you can add these mods, etc." I see nothing wrong with that. Also, the PC community seems to be more helpful and less obnoxious (look at Xbox live). There is still harassment on the PC and our community could always be better, but Xbox live is out of hand with the vulgarity, name calling, sexism, etc.

Also, the openness of the PC is key. MS has been doing terrible things with Xbox live arcade (or whatever it's called). When I spoke with Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja) at PAX East he said that MS had forced him to release his game only on Xbox and he was very upset that he was not allowed to release his game on the PC. That is just nonsense. Exclusivity hurts everyone and I will not shell out a couple hundred for a console just to play a $15 indie game... with a fucking gamepad (I only use gamepads for fighting games and some platformers). There is no reason for nonsense like that. It hurts gaming as a whole. The PC is way better for indie gaming and I have been enjoying indie games 100x more than these hollywood games like CoD.

The other thing I have never understood is the whole "know your roots" thing. My roots are more attached to the games than to a box of hardware. I started with an Atari... then an Apple 2... then a NES... then a SNES (I hated the genesis because I didn't care for the games)... then a 386... then a 486 DX 2 (highmem.sys=awesome)... then a 120Mhz pentium... then a 400MHz Athlon with an Nvidia TNT 2 Ultra (so freaking fast).

I went to those systems because of the games. SNES and even N64 are still two of my favorite consoles because of the games... I think I own a Wii... somewhere (?)... if I had enough spare time I might even play Zelda. So, it's really about the games for me... And right now, I am having a much better experience with PC gaming. I see no reason not so share it. Also, do not confuse my PC evangalism with bashing... I will try to be nicer to console players... Because some of the gamers I have converted have emailed me saying things like: "Dude, thank you for turning me on to PC gaming. Nehrim is amazing" ... or,  "I can't imagine playing this with an Xbox controller not that I am use to the mouse and keyboard..." or, "Thanks dude, this game is so much better with these mods... and the texture pack is amazing too."

Again, it's the games that make me happy... or "like a kid"... though I guess I'm a curmudgeon. I typically do not play simple games that make me feel like a kid. I typically prefer more different games now... ones that challenge my mind and deal with darker subject matter OR games that break paradigms. I was easier to please as a kid.

I do NOT want the console vs PC debate to go away... I just want it to grow up. Let's truly talk about the strengths of both... lets educate ourselves and each other... lets share and help others discover... Also, we can help them put together a low-cost PCs to play the games on...

Bottom line... We all need to work on being nicer to each other so that we can better share our experiences and help each other discover.

I want to end with a serious question... Are there any other reasons to play games on a console other than the exclusive titles? I truly do not see any other reasons. I am willing to listen.

Very well put, one big reason some people stick to console, say, they have gamer parents who wish not to use a PC, or as I put it, there are countries were getting a good gaming PC is next to impossible, but consoles are aplenty.  And I agree with envaglising the whole console gamepad on PC, fuck, you witnessed me, albeit with a crooked eyebrow and a sneer, playing Skyrim on my PC with my PS3 gamepad, but it works beautifully with the default clunky ass interface.  I recently got Saints Row The Third, and I play the hell out of it with my gamepad, why, it's easier on my hands for long game sessions, and atm, this Lycosa enjoys glitching and causing mass  fuck ups during gameplay.

I have heard about that recent screw up with indie games, but that's only on the indie section, if a dev releases it non-indie, and cross platform, then they have no issues.  I do agree with that, but indie games should be on any platform, they usuallly are not better stuck to one platform or another.  Super Meatboy for example, first released on xbox and PS3, gamepad works SO much better on those two, and the dev's stuck in a free "DLC" downloader that you can download custom levels.

I do agree the PC vs (x)platform needs to grow up, but I've been reading gaming magazines since I first bothered learning english in 1990, and only reason I sounded the way I do is, well, sales have been always the way to show who's leading, yes, but I also say, who cares?  What I will say is, that's fucking awesome that a dev can make that much money, and this doesn't apply to just EA.  Marketers said the xbox 360 failed in Japan, but explain then, why the hell do they have a metric fuckton of niche games on the marketplace (you have to register a Japanese email account and make a xbox live silver account with that).

The same group of marketers always say this and that, this console failed, same console goes up in sales, it's a trend, always is, always will be.

I will agree on your point about uneducated people bashing things they know not of.  At the same time, even educated points sometimes just seem frivelous, I will say it again, just play it because you are a gamer, that's what a gamer really is in my opinion, and most would agree, being a gamer means that you enjoy video games of any kind, or as some, a certain genre.

Also, remember, when the 360 was released, nobody was thinking about a 3.2ghz triple core processor with two SMT's per core.  Then again, it's a Power based processor, the same goes for the cell processor, nobody was thinking about a giant multicore processor in the home in that way, now they are.  Remember, sometimes consoles do help push PC devs further the tech.  Take a look at games back in 2005 when the 360 was released.  Yes, the PC is now ahead, but still, it's humbling to see the trends how each platform helps each other.

On a last note, as stated previously, kind of glad both MS and Sony looking at using sem-standard hardware to ease cross-development, it worked for the original Xbox, and it will work down the road.

I own all 3 consoles, as well as multiple computers:  I see no reason to console bash, however I can tell you that the majority of the games I want to play.. play better on the computer with a keyboard and mouse.

I personally prefer the graphics, style of game play and the open ability to mod my games that the pc provides for me.

I am an avid gamer. I have been my whole life. And honestly, when it comes to the PC vs. console debate I say, "Why?"

Does it matter who plays what? Does it matter what system is better? Not really. As long as whatever your system of choice, you are given a good and quality experience.

I own all of the consoles, and several computers in my home, and for the certain games I play on them, I love each machine for it. I had my debates on wether or not i'd play any of the machines, but then looked at the titles of games, and if there were cross platform ones, and just decided screw it.

For the cross platform games, if there is a PC version, I play it on the PC. Some titles play well on the PC when ported to it, some don't. Some games I would rather play on x console because the game was designed to work on that console better.

Take for instance, Gran Turismo 5. Yeah, that game could be awsome on PC. You can get steering wheels for PC everywhere, and console like controllers too. But the majority of the game was designed with the PS3 in mind. And honestly, that is where it should stay.

Every machine I have, I play at least once a week. More if I'm into a current game I jus bought. But I just don't see a reason to compare them. Each was designed for a specific style of play, and therefore cannot be compared.

The PS3 was made, to expand the abilities of developers to make a more imersive game with the Cell processor. Unfortunately, in Sony's greed, they made it hard to code for proprietary reasons.

360 was made to bring closer multiplayer games.

The Wii was made, and advertised to a whole group of people that everyone was ignoring. The family. And their gamble paid off. Big time.

PC gaming, is kind of the holy grail in the aspect that you can customize your PC to fit the playing style, and amount of imersion you want in your games, just by switching out a bit of hardware.

I say, stop the bickering. Stop comparing. As long as we're all gamers, and as long as we all enjoy gaming, who's to say which is best, and just have fun gaming!!

I will never buy a game on Origin ever period. It is EA I do not trust them as far as I can throw them.

Lets say if CD Projekt turned GOG into a system like Origin and Steam and started selling AAA titles and such. I would have zero problem buying games from them but there is no way in hell I will put that much trust in EA.

My experience with Origin was this, I loved battlefield 2142, titan mode was awesome to me and the style of the game fit me. I had an urge to play it again but couldn't get the incremental updates to work properly. I decided to use origin (being an avid steam user) I expected to enter my cd key and get the updates digitally.

That doesn't work on Origin (why?) and customer support said they would give me a new CD key for the game (not in any way did they have proof I owned the game) and proceeded to have me try 4 different cd keys that didn't work over the course of 25 minutes, then told me I was SoL. They left a sour taste in my mouth basically shooing me off.

sqaure enix has promised to back Ouya and are releasing final fantasy III just for it, well maybe for android but the Ouya is the reason they are releasing it, I think it will work out great if they get more AAA companies on the bandwagon

I'm strictly a console gamer, and as far as platform fuding goes, from my personal experience and observation it comes from the pc side 99% of the time, and I think it's mostly a knee-jerk defensive reaction, underdog syndrome, similar to the attitude you get from Battlefield players in regards to Call of Duty.Bsttlefield players generally hate/despise CoD and it's community. They think they play a superior, more intelligent game.CoD players are indiferent and dont give a..... and I've found that alot of Cod player actually sing the praises of BF.But CoD is king of the hill, the financial Big Daddy.... the A#1 most popular FPS on the planet... so much so that the franchise and the genere are almost interchangeable terms. And that garners alot of resentment..... And an attitude from the fans of the less popular title that theyre somehow " special " or " smatrer for appreaiting and recognizing a superior game. Or smarter for playing a more stratigic one.Meanwhile CoD players arnt really worried about it. I've had probably over or around 200 people on my XBL friends list at various times over the years... none of whom have ever expressed any resentment tward PC gaming or their community... Some play on both PC and console, and some just prefer console exlusively.Dont worry we console gamers arnt mad at ya.... mabey a lil jeallous from time to time because of all the unique indie games you guys get... and mabey the Steam Summer Sale.... but generally we're a content happly bunch who dont even know there is any animosity untill we go onto an internet forum and get slapped in the face with it.I guess it's a good thing that a large percentage of console gamers dont even bother going on gaming forums.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on many points.

I'm one of those people that sees evidence, draws a conclusion from it, and then has trouble accepting it when other people come to a different conclusion. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I still kinda bugs me a bit. And for that, I apologise.

I guess I'll start with some things I prefer about console gaming:

- Quick setup (Every LAN party I've been to involves a wait of a few hours before people actually get into a game together)

- Simplicity of multi-system networking (It's just no mess, no fuss. You don't get version mismatches, or random origin issues)

- You don't have to modify graphics settings to suit your hardware

Why I prefer PC gaming over console gaming:

- The games are cheaper (In Australia, you can't buy a new release console game for less than $100, $120 if it's really popular)

- The graphics are better due to more powerful hardware

- Greater choice of interfaces (if you like the xbox controller, go ahead and plug it in)

- Dedicated servers (I can't tell you how many games of Halo 3 have been ruined by poor ping, and little control over server choices)

- An active modding ecosystem (This can turn a game like Arma 2 into DayZ)

- A wider variety of games and genres

- A helpful community

- Better portability (Laptops = gaming anywhere)

- Not having to replace discs whenever I want to play something else.

I don't see the logic in choosing the inferior of two options, it's not jealousy, it's a conclusion that I've drawn based on my experiences.
